LEADAA stands for Leadership Education Advancement Development for Asian Australians, a not for profit organisation established in 2016 to support the leadership development and education of Asian Australians. In the past we ran workshops and programs targeting culturally diverse women, including understanding how young women from culturally diverse backgrounds understand leadership and power, panel discussions on how people from different cultures perceive aging and motherhood.
In 2020, we saw an increase in racism towards Asian-Australians, with an increase of physical assault towards Asian women living in Australia. In response to this, the Women Self Defence project was born. The safety awareness video series we created incorporated some of the unique experiences of Asian women living in Australia, often combining racism and sexism.
Working in partnership with Anne Pang Self Defence, Anne (head instructor) guided the development of potential dangerous scenarios and defence strategies. These strategies have been used successfully in real-life scenarios by women. While it is acknowledged that these strategies only reduce the risk, it does not completely eliminate the risks. However, learning them can potentially save lives. We hope the videos will inspire more people to develop a safety awareness mindset. Please help us share them with as many women as possible.
The logo features a triskelion or triskele to represent movement and motion, which is a symbol of strength, continuous movement, progress, evolution and development. The two hands represents two people helping each other and symbolises "together we grow".
